Omaha Author Educates Children about
American Pit Bulls with Two "Doggone" Great Books

Omaha, NE  (November 2016)—American Pit Bulls, though a popular breed, are often misunderstood. Author and former educator Barbara Freeman has a passion for them. While her children were growing up, her family adopted Princess, an American Pit Bull they renamed Sugar because of her sweet disposition. Now, she has turned her passion for the breed into a passion for educating children about them. With two books in the series so far, Sugar: A Princess Pit Bull Finds Her Family and Super Smart Sugar  (Laredo Publishing), Freeman’s books promote love, self-acceptance, and positive self-esteem.

Sugar: A Princess Pit Bull Finds Her Family features Sadie,  a proud mother of five soft and silky American Pit Bull  Terriers. She dreams that each puppy will find a safe home  with loving humans. Even though Princess is the runt of the litter, she is the true leader and relates to her beloved brothers with warmth and care. As her brothers find their own families, Princess bids each of them goodbye, hoping one day she will find a home, too. Feeling a bit discouraged, Princess worries that she will never find a family of her own. Then, everything changes when Michael, a volunteer caregiver, arrives to the shed and Princess’s ultimate dream comes true.

“Sugar is a great story,” says reviewer Sandra Hodges, who gave the title five stars on “The easy reading and touching story will hold the interest of children of all ages. I was very impressed with the realistic explanation of how puppies are selected after birth. The inclusion of the family tree is a nice touch.”

Sugar’s story continues with Freeman’s second book, Super Smart Sugar. Many people suspect that their dogs are exceptionally smart and loving. Sugar, Freeman’s family dog, is both intelligent and humorous. This book depicts actual situations that showcase Sugar’s talents and skills. The story is complemented with educational material highlighting the intelligence of dogs, a dog intelligence ranking and a quiz for children to identify their own dog’s performance and skills.

Reviewer Janice Gilmore awarded Super Smart Sugar five stars on “I love Barbara Freeman’s book. In a very subtle way, it attacks stereotypes by showing the kind and loving side of a Pit Bull. Pit Bulls are often seen in a very bad light, but Sugar is seen in a fun and delightful light.…Barbara has a very kind way of engaging children….”

Popular and Touching New Children's Book Shows Another Side to Pit Bulls

Written by Barbara Freeman, ‘Sugar A Princess Pit Bull Finds Her Family’ is attracting attention from parents and children for its beautiful story that sheds new light on one of the United States’ most popular and misunderstood breeds.

Omaha, NE —(SBWIRE) — 04/07/2014 — In Barbara Freeman’s new children’s book, Sugar A Princess Pit Bull Finds Her Family, the star of the story was a real dog – a dog that came into the author’s life and changed it forever. Although born Princess,” the pup was quickly re-named due to her sweet-as-sugar nature and loving personality.

Sugar A Princess Pit Bull Finds Her Family tells her story. From her beginnings as the runt of the litter, to her dreams of finding a family and finally, to her dreams being realized when a caregiver takes Sugar to her forever home.

Teaching children about perseverance, love and the importance of never giving up, the book is also a wonderful educational tool and support system for children who have been adopted, have parents who are divorcing, or foster children.

I think any child who has felt left behind or unwanted will relate to Sugar’s story,” says Freeman. “We’ve already heard from teachers and parents that kids see themselves in her simple desire for a loving family. When she finds that family, it shows children that dreams do come true – and that someday, their dreams will as well.”

Sadie Sue has become the proud mother of five fuzzy soft and silky American Pit Bull Terriers. She dreams that each puppy will find a safe home with loving humans.

Princess happens to be the runt of the litter. She is the true leader of all the puppies and relates to her beloved brothers with warmth and care. As her brothers find their own families, Princess bids goodbye to each of them. Princess wants a home too, but her challenge is to find a family who wants a tiny runt like her.

Finally, when Michael, the volunteer caregiver arrives to the shed, Princess's ultimate dream comes true.

Princess was a real dog and the heart of the author's family for many years. She was renamed Sugar for her warm and loving nature.

Since its release, the book has won the hearts of readers around the world and enjoyed rave reviews.

“I was so touched by the gentleness conveyed by the author in her descriptive and imaginative narration of Sugar's story. Never having much experience with dogs, this book expands my understanding of the unconditional love and loyalty that owners have with their pets,” wrote Kathy Kcosis.

“I just finished reading this book to a 9 year old family member. He was in awe! He said he could tell Princess and her family were loved. It made him happy to know that people cared about Princess and her brothers to give them good homes. He said thumbs up!!” wrote Crystal Dosher.

Calling the story “fabulous,” Lucinda Krafka wrote: “What a great book. I bought it for my grandson and we have enjoyed it so much. A must have for a child's collection.”
